CONCRETE WAYS TO INCLUDE INDIVIDUALS WITH DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES IN CONGREGATIONAL LIFE
We seek to know God’s will and way for people with disabilities who are often devalued by society in this sinful world and strive to ‘constantly be transformed by the renewing of our minds’ through the study of God’s Word. We would want to help support those members in our congregations to feel like they are strong, contributing and valuable part of the communion of saints. Here follow some ideas to include our brothers and sisters within the congregation:
-Giving invitations (personal call and offer of a ride if possible) to social events, worship services, lunch and coffee socials, sports events and other church events. -Announcing the person’s birthday in the bulletin. -Special song request by individual to be sung either before or at the beginning of the worship service. -Invitations to other children/adults birthday get-togethers. -Involving all individuals in church instruction classes; Catechism, Young Peoples, Adults Bible Study societies, choir, music groups etc. -Deacons or Hospitality committee to set up a list of interested families willing to have the individual over on Sundays. A quick reminder to the host a few days before the visit may be helpful. -Prayer and conversation topic in pastoral visits (encourage befriending, understanding the needs of others in the congregation) -Make social gathering areas, entrances and washrooms wheelchair accessible. -Encourage a friendly atmosphere in church life to all people. -Allow dignity, choices and roles appropriate to the person with the disability with others in the same age or interest group.
